Indonesian police fired tear gas this morning at 1,000 anti-US student protesters who were trying to break down the front gate of the parliament building, witnesses said.
The demonstrators, angry at the US-led air attacks on Afghanistan, failed to break down the gate. They retreated and sat down in front of the complex, partially blocking a major highway.
Yesterday police fired warning shots, teargas and water cannon to try to disperse 400 Muslim protesters near the US embassy in Jakarta.
