Teenager arrested over Belfast murders

A 16-year-old youth was arrested yesterday in connection with the murder in March of two men in Belfast. The youth from west Belfast was being questioned by detectives last night about the killings of Edward Burns (36) and Joseph Jones (38), who died in what is believed to have been a feud involving dissident republicans.

Burns, from the Ardoyne area of north Belfast, was found shot dead in a car park off the Falls Road close to a GAA club. The body of Jones, from Poleglass, west Belfast, was found in Ardoyne. It is believed that he was battered to death.

Gardaí find missing girl in Swords

Gardaí in Swords have found a nine-year-old Jamaican girl who went missing from her home in Donabate, Co Dublin, on Monday night. Rachel Barton was located by a Garda patrol in the Swords area at around 6pm yesterday. She was safe and well.

Divers renew search for Latvian

Garda divers carried out a renewed search yesterday for a 28-year-old Latvian man who has been missing since going for a swim in the Avoca river in Arklow, Co Wicklow, on August 12th.

A two-man Garda team used a rigid inflatable boat to carry out a surface search of the river and an expanse of sea, but there was no sighting of the man's body. A tiler who lived in Drogheda, he went for a swim with a Latvian friend but did not return.

Two men attack elderly woman

Gardaí in Galway are searching for two men who attacked an elderly woman in the city on Monday.

The woman was standing in the grounds of the cathedral car park in the city centre at 2pm when she was approached by two men, who asked her for money. When she refused, one of the men punched her in the face and the other cut her arm with a knife. The woman, who is in her 60s, was treated at University Hospital Galway.
