Deliberations to begin in cocaine case
The jury in the case of three Englishmen charged in connection with a €440 million drug seizure off the west Cork coast last summer will start its deliberations next week.
Judge Seán Ó Donnabháin gave the jury at Cork Circuit Criminal Court the choice of starting its deliberations before the weekend or waiting until Monday and the jury opted for the latter.
Joseph Daly (41), Carisbrooke Avenue, Bexley, Kent; Perry Wharrie (48), Pyrles Lane, Loughton, Essex; and Martin Wanden, (45) no fixed abode, all deny possessing cocaine for sale or supply at Dunlough Bay on July 2nd, 2007.
Yesterday, on the 38th day of the trial, counsel for Mr Wanden and Mr Wharrie made closing submissions. Counsel for Joe Daly earlier made closing submissions.
Sentence delayed in child porn trial
A Fingal market gardener caught with more than 10,000 images of child pornography, mainly showing "very young children", after Austrian police alerted gardaí, will be sentenced in November.
Colm Carty (39), Channel Road, Rush, Co Dublin, downloaded and printed off graphic images.
Carty told gardaí his behaviour was "at the level of fantasy but he had no intention of bringing it to reality". He pleaded guilty to possession of the images at his home on February 16th, 2007.
Det Sgt Maura Walsh said Carty admitted it was a compulsion and he got excited by doing something wrong as he never even got a parking ticket before.
Judge Desmond Hogan, who viewed a sample of the images, adjourned sentence to November and ordered the preparation of a probation report and an updated report from the Granada Institute.
Man who 'signed' for drugs jailed
A father of one, who signed for a package containing €43,000 worth of cocaine addressed to a fictional person, has been given a seven-year sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
Romose Sakpoba (31), North Strand Road, Dublin, who has six previous convictions, told gardaí he believed the package contained "Italian shirts". He pleaded guilty to possession of the drugs for sale or supply at Fairview Strand on September 21st, 2004.
Sex offender (60) offers to move
A man who sexually assaulted a seven-year-old boy over a two-year period has been given two weeks by a judge to come up with proposals for moving to another area so as to avoid meeting his victim and his family.
Patrick O'Brien (60), Tankardstown North, Kilmallock, Co Limerick, pleaded guilty to six counts of sexually assaulting the boy between April 4th, 2004, and September 1st, 2006.
Judge Patrick Moran warned that even if O'Brien did come back with a such a proposal, he was giving no guarantees regarding sentencing.
