Boy (4) struck by lorry dies after five days
A four-year-old boy has died in hospital, five days after he was seriously injured when a lorry rolled over him while he was playing near his home in Cork city.
Kelvin Purcell from Ardcullen was on a skateboard when he was struck by a reversing coal lorry. Kelvin remained in a critical condition in intensive care at Cork University Hospital but died yesterday with his parents Elizabeth Purcell and Jonathan O'Callaghan at his bedside. It is the second tragedy to hit the family. Their five-year-old son, Daniel, died in October 2000 in a fire.
Near-drowning boy wakes
Four-year-old Irish boy Jake Howe has woken from his coma 11 days after nearly drowning during a family holiday in Spain, writes Gerard Couzens.
Doctors took him off the drugs that were keeping him unconscious on Tuesday night after deciding he was stable enough to breathe on his own.
Jake's parents Michelle Howe and Declan Molloy were by his bedside at Son Dureta Hospital in Majorca.
A source at Son Dureta said: "Jake is now breathing on his own. He is also conscious . . . He will remain in the children's intensive care unit at Son Dureta for the time being."
Jake fell into the pool at the Hotel Ola Club Cala Llenya on August 23rd. A lifeguard and a British marine resuscitated him.
Woman arrested over May death
A 52-year-old woman was arrested yesterday over the suspicious death of a woman in Co Westmeath earlier this year.
Mother-of-three Lily Scanlon was found dead on the kitchen floor of her home at Valleycourt, Athlone last May. Detectives believe she was involved in a row at her home.
A woman was arrested yesterday and was being held at Athlone Garda station.
A man and a woman, both in their 50s, were previously arrested over the death but were released without charge.
Ryanair plane in lightning strike
A Ryanair plane en route from Dublin to Madrid was diverted to Stansted Airport after it was struck by lightning yesterday afternoon.
Flight FR7156, which departed Dublin at 2.25pm, was ordered to divert to London Stansted as a precautionary measure. The aircraft was cleared for departure and left Stansted for Madrid at 4.15pm.
Man arrested over stabbing
A man was last night recovering in hospital following a stabbing in the early hours of yesterday in Galway.
A 32-year-old man, who was arrested on the west side of the city yesterday morning, was last night being questioned by gardaí .
A spokesperson for University College Hospital last night said the victim was "stable".
Union members to deliver aid
Members of the communication workers union were this morning due to embark on a 3,800km journey to deliver provisions to Bulgarian orphanages.
The CWU members filled two trucks with supplies including baby bottles, buggies and toiletries.
