Gilmore says Labour will gain eight seats
Changed economic times always brought about significant political changes, Labour leader Eamon Gilmore said yesterday as he announced details of his party's special delegate conference in Kilkenny on November 28th-30th.
He told journalists at Leinster House that based on opinion polls conducted over recent months, Labour would gain about eight extra seats in a general election.
Labour deputy leader and finance spokeswoman Joan Burton is to lead a two-hour session on the economy which will feature an address by Ictu general secretary David Begg.
'Word' magazine to cease publication
The Wordmagazine, which has been published monthly in Ireland by the Society of the Divine Word for 55 years, is to cease publication. Next month's edition will be its last.
In 1970 the Wordhad a circulation of 260,000, its editor-in-chief Prof Fr Vincent Twomey recalled yesterday. Of that, 170,000 were sold in Ireland and Britain, 50,000 in the United States, 30,000 in Australia and 10,000 were sold elsewhere.
Man still held over Cork drugs find
Detectives in Cork were last night continuing to question a man in his 30s arrested following the seizure of drugs with a street value of €575,000 in the north of the county on Wednesday night.
A house was raided in Castletownroche on Wednesday. More than 50kg of cannabis was found and a man was arrested. He was still being questioned last night in Fermoy Garda station.
North murder case judgment reserved
The Special Criminal Court has reserved judgment in the trial of a Belfast man accused of the murder of a taxi driver in March last year. Gerard Mackin (26) has denied the murder of Edward Burns (36), a father of five, of Prospect Park, Belfast, at Bog Meadow, Falls Road, Belfast.
He also denies the attempted murder of Damien O'Neill (25), the possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and causing serious harm to Mr O'Neill on the same date.
Higgins to contest European poll
Former TD Joe Higgins has announced his candidacy on the Socialist Party ticket in the elections to the European Parliament next June.
