Man dies on construction site in Achill

The Health and Safety Authority has begun an investigation into the death of a man on a construction site on Achill Island, Co Mayo yesterday.

Tom Cafferkey (61), Dooniver, Achill, died at 9am when he fell from the roof of a single-storey extension which he was helping a relative to construct.

Mr Cafferkey, a married man with a grown-up family, died at the scene.

His body was brought to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar where a postmortem was carried out,

11 charged after Cork drug raids

Eleven people have been charged after an undercover operation in Cork city targeting small-time drug dealers. Two women and nine men, mainly in their 20s, were arrested over the past two days.

Undercover officers had been buying small amounts of drugs from suspected dealers around the city mainly at weekends since before Christmas.

Cocaine, cannabis resin and cannabis plants with an approximate value of €6,000 were recovered.

Man held over canal death released

A man who was arrested on Tuesday in relation to the ongoing investigation into the murder of Yvonne O’Shea has been released without charge.

Ms O’Shea died on November 22nd last year at Vicarstown, Co Laois. Her body was recovered from the Grand Canal in Co Laois.

A Garda spokesman said a file would be prepared for the DPP in relation to the man’s detention.

McAleese accepts immigration award

President Mary McAleese, has spoken of the burden faced by undocumented Irish immigrants in the US, who are afraid to return home for family occasions, writes Denis Staunton in Boston.

Accepting the Solas Award from the Irish Immigration Centre in Boston last night, Mrs McAleese said she hoped the Obama administration and Congress would move to regularise the status of the undocumented.

Earlier, the President launched the Irish Pastoral Centre’s senior citizen outreach programme in Dorchester outside Boston.
