Woman charged with murder remanded

AN 18-year-old woman charged with the murder of her brother has been remanded on bail.

Caroline Brennan appeared before Kilkenny District Court yesterday. Michael Brennan (22) died at a party in his uncle’s house on Barrack Street, Castlecomer, Co Kilkenny, on December 30th last year. He was discovered with a knife wound to his upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services.

Judge William Harnett remanded Ms Brennan of Love Lane, Castlecomer, Co Kilkenny, on bail to appear at Kilkenny District Court on May 12th.

Nine charged after pub fracas

One woman and eight men were charged yesterday with offences in connection with an incident in Balbriggan, Co Dublin, on bank holiday Monday.

Gardaí were called out to deal with a violent fracas at John D’s pub in the town shortly before 7pm.

The men from Balbriggan and Skerries were charged at Swords District Court and at the Bridewell with breaches of the peace and being drunk in a public place as well as property damage.

The charge sheets listed damage to windows, furniture, glasses and spirit bottles belonging to publican William Roe at John D’s.

Seven of the eight men – Martin Lawrence (29), of Bremore Drive, Balbriggan, Richard Daly (29) of Mourne Close, Skerries, Gerard Tuite, (46), of Derham Park, Balbriggan, Martin McDonagh (33), of Chapel Gate, Balbriggan, Christopher Lawrence (26), from Mourne Park, Skerries, Stephen Lawrence (22) and David Lawrence (26) from Gardiner’s Hill, Balbriggan

– were remanded on bail.

Brian Lawrence (30), of Hampton Wood, Balbriggan was remanded to Cloverhill prison until May 12th.

The woman, Annie Lawrence (22), of Dun Saithne Crescent, Balbriggan, was charged with intoxication in a public place and a breach of the peace. She was remanded on bail until July.

Dangerous driving trial adjourned

The trial of a woman charged with dangerous driving which caused the death of another woman out walking a dog near Claregalway two years ago has been adjourned to October for hearing.

NM Devi Chalikonda, The Ashes, Cnoc an Glas, Spiddal, is charged with dangerous driving which caused the death of Eileen O’Halloran, at Cregboy, Claregalway, on August 28th, 2007.

At Galway Circuit Criminal Court yesterday judge Raymond Groarke adjourned the matter for trial to October 6th.

GAA club theft case adjourned

A judge has adjourned the case against a Co Limerick woman who stole almost €100,000 from a GAA club after hearing that she still owes nearly €40,000 to the club.

Patricia Carroll, of Chapel Street, Kilfinane, Co Limerick, took €98,316 from Blackrock GAA club where she was club treasurer over an 18-month period. Previously, the 49-year-old pleaded guilty at Limerick Circuit Court to 19 charges arising out of the theft of €63,543 in cash. She also admitted to forging cheques to the value of €34,773 during the same period.

Judge Carroll Moran adjourned the case until June 9th to allow for the money from the sale of a house owned by Ms Carroll to be paid.
