Prosecutors given evidence on G20 death

LONDON – Prosecutors will decide whether a police officer should face criminal charges in connection with the death of newspaper seller Ian Tomlinson during the anti-G20 protests in April after a police watchdog passed them evidence.

The Crown Prosecution Service will now consider whether the officer should face prosecution, possibly for manslaughter. – (Reuters)

Migrants, locals clash in Algiers

ALGIERS – About 100 Algerians and Chinese migrant workers fought with knives and bludgeons in Algiers yesterday in an unprecedented flare-up of local anger at immigration.

Planeloads of Chinese workers have been arriving in the north African oil producer, mainly to work on state-funded construction projects, and their presence has fuelled resentment in a country where seven out of 10 adults under 30 are unemployed. A diplomat at China’s embassy in Algiers said about 10 Chinese were injured and five Chinese-owned shops were looted. – (Reuters)

Study links 9/11 attacks to asthma

NEW YORK – Thousands of people exposed to choking dust after the destruction of the World Trade Center in New York have developed asthma, a study has shown.

They included rescue workers, office staff and passersby. A follow-up study of more than 46,000 people caught up in the September 11th, 2001 attacks found one in 10 had been diagnosed with asthma five or six years after the disaster. None of these 4,600 individuals had a previous history of the disease. – (PA)

Tory wins first open postal vote

LONDON – British Conservatives announced yesterday that Dr Sarah Wollaston had won the first ever open postal vote of an entire constituency to select a parliamentary candidate.

The party said it held the open primary poll for the Totnes seat in Devon to engage with voters in a “direct way” after sitting MP Anthony Steen said he would stand down in the wake of the expenses scandal. Ballot papers were sent to all 69,000 voters in Totnes and Dr Wollaston won with 7,914 votes. – (PA)
