Man dies in ‘suspicious’ circumstances
A postmortem will be carried out today on the body of a man (26) who has died in "suspicious" circumstances at a house in Waterford city, writes Ciaran Murphy.
The body of the man, a Polish national who has not yet been named, was discovered at Morrison’s Avenue in the city yesterday.
A source close to the investigation yesterday said the man received a stab wound shortly before his death, which gardaí are treating as suspicious.
It is understood he was a resident at the house and has been living in Waterford with family members for a number of years.
Gardaí sealed off the scene yesterday pending a technical examination and carried out a number of interviews in relation to the man’s death.
Passenger spotted with child porn
A man was already serving a suspended sentence for having pornographic images of children when he was spotted looking at other child porn pictures on a bus, a court heard yesterday.
Dundalk Circuit Court also heard that gardaí believed that some of the pictures were of a “child in the northeast of the country”.
Barry Watters (34), Hazelwood Avenue, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to having the images at his home on April 25th last year.
Gardaí searched his house after another passenger on the bus contacted them.
The man saw Watters looking at pornographic images of children on a digital camera.
Man charged with 1986 murder
The PSNI crime operations department has charged a 51-year-old man with the murder of Stanley Close (55), who was found dead in his flat in Belfast in August 1986.
The man, who was arrested in Manchester earlier this week following a renewed investigation into the case, will appear in Belfast Magistrates Court tomorrow.
Mr Close was found strangled to death at his flat in Campton Court in the Willowfield area of east Belfast.
Nuclear power a last resort – report
Nuclear power should be a “last resort” for Ireland given that a new electricity interconnector with Wales would become operational in 2012, said an independent business information group in the UK, writes Frank McDonald.
Datamonitor’s senior energy analyst Maria Dias said: “The lack of current nuclear generation in the country may make it unfeasible, as supporting infrastructures, regulations and political issues would have to be addressed.”
An Eirgrid-commissioned report named nuclear as an option, given the State’s 2020 renewables targets and the “retirement” of existing coal, oil and peat-fired stations.
Cannabis worth over €1.2m seized
Cannabis worth over €1.2 million was discovered in a van at Swords Road, Whitehall, Dublin, yesterday evening.
The driver of the van, a man in his twenties, was arrested and detained under section two of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996.
Gardaí from the Organised Crime Unit and the Garda National Drug Unit seized the cannabis and arrested the man as part of an operation targeting the distribution of controlled drugs in the Dublin area.
