Inquiry into NI sex abuse case

An independent inquiry has been announced into a notorious sex abuse case that has provoked a public outcry and political problems for a Stormont Minister, writes Dan Keenan.

Health Minister Michael McGimpsey referred the case of two McDermott brothers to the Regulation and Quality Improvement Agency for investigation.

They were controversially allowed to return home to the Fermanagh village of Donagh, where they committed their abuse, after they were held to be mentally unfit to stand trial.

James and Owen-Roe McDermott voluntarily went into residential care last summer but the initial storm of controversy over the decision to allow them to go back to Donagh has yet to abate.

Along with two other brothers, John and Peter Paul, they faced more than 60 charges of sex abuse.

The man was being held under section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007, while the woman was being held under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act 1939.

An armed gang broke into Mr Ronan's home at Ballycallan, Co Kilkenny, on the morning of November 3rd, 2009.

They held his family at gunpoint as part of an attempt to steal € 3 million from Mr Ronan's workplace at the Parliament Street branch of the Bank of Ireland in Kilkenny.

The robbery attempt failed and a major Garda operation was put in place.
