Ugandan rebel troops kill Briton

NAIROBI- Rebels from Uganda's Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) shot dead a British tourist yesterday in an ambush in a northern Ugandan national park, the military said.

On Saturday, suspected LRA rebels shot dead a British aid worker in an ambush in neighbouring southern Sudan.

The LRA has waged a 19-year-old war against the Ugandan government, and last month began targeting foreigners -- apparently in reprisal for arrest warrants issued for their leaders by the International Criminal Court (ICC) - (Reuters).

Syrian leader to address nation

DAMASCUS - Syrian president Bashar al-Assad will address the nation tomorrow as Damascus faces mounting international pressure over an alleged link to the killing of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik al-Hariri.

Officials were not immediately available for comment, but the speech, expected to be carried live by official broadcast media, is a relatively rare event in the Arab state.

Damascus has come under fierce international pressure since Hariri's killing in Beirut on February 14th.

It was forced to pull its troops out of Lebanon after a 29-year military presence.

Syria has denied any involvement in Hariri's death.- (Reuters)

Ambassador 'recalled' to Iran

DUBLIN - The protocol division of the Department of Foreign Affairs received notification yesterday from the Iranian embassy in Dublin that ambassador Hamid Reza Nikkar "has been recalled to Iran and will be relinquishing his appointment".

Mr Nikkar is reported to be under arrest in Tehran's notorious Evin Prison on a charge of financial mismanagement involving a construction project in Iran. He was reportedly arrested when he returned to Iran during the summer.

Queen Live Aid gig the greatest

Queen's flamboyant performance at Live Aid 20 years ago has been crowned the world's greatest rock gig.

The set came top of a poll voted for by a panel of over 60 artists, music journalists, broadcasters and music industry executives.

42nd avian flu death in Vietnam

HANOI - Bird flu has claimed its 42nd victim in Vietnam, the worst-affected country, amid signs the virus has hit the Asian nation earlier and on a larger scale than last year.

News of the death came as world health experts agreed in Geneva that controlling the spread of avian flu in birds must be the priority.- (Reuters)
