Kigali - Tens of thousands of civilians have been displaced in Rwanda's troubled northwest in the past few weeks and an estimated 478,000 people are now living in makeshift camps, aid agencies said yesterday.

Ms Anne O'Mahony, director of Concern in Rwanda, said civilians were seeking military protection from Hutu rebels and the numbers of displaced had increased dramatically over the last few weeks, in some places fourfold.
