A 19-month-old baby boy has been reunited with his parents after he was driven away in a car seized by hijackers in Belfast last night.

The vehicle was hijacked in the Mays Meadow area of the city a short distance from the Waterfront Hall and driven across the Albert Bridge into east Belfast.

Police said the silver car was found abandoned a short time later in the nationalist Short Strand area and the child, unharmed, was reunited with its distraught parents.

The hijacking may have been linked to disturbances caused by youths in the Short Strand, said police, who appealed for any witnesses to the incident to contact them.
