Find comfort at Console's conference:People in crisis and those bereaved by suicide may find some comfort at the annual conference of Console, the support organisation for those bereaved by suicide on Thursday in the City West Hotel, Saggart, Dublin.

Speakers will talk about how best to recognise signs of depression and suicide in young people and look at ways of coping with the journey through grief.

The emotional effects of a cancer diagnosis is the theme of a free public meeting on Thursday at 6.30pm in the Radisson SAS Royal Hotel, Golden Lane, Dublin.

Dr Shawn Steggles, the director of psychosocial oncology and spiritual resources at Cross Cancer Institute, Edmonton, Canada, will be the keynote speaker. Dr Sonya Collier, clinical psychologist at St James’s Hospital, will also speak.

Two new parenting courses

Parenting courses devised by clinical psychologist Tony Humphries are run by trained parent mentors throughout Ireland. Next month, two courses begin. The first is an eight to ten session course which starts in Newbridge, Co Kildare on April 7th (tel: 087- 9214534).

The second is a pre-teen and teen workshop in Balbriggan, Co Dublin on Tuesday, April 21st.

Fruit and veg study at Queen’s

Researchers at Queen’s University Belfast are seeking volunteers who are willing to eat between two and seven portions of fruit and vegetables daily for 12 weeks.

The research team is keen to see whether there is a link between eating fruit and vegetables and the action of insulin in the body and the prevention of type 2 diabetes.

Volunteers must be healthy and normally eat less than two portions of fruit and vegetables a day. They must also live in Northern Ireland.
