Senator Jillian Van Turnhout, chair of the Children’s Mental Health Coalition
Do you think you have a healthy lifestyle?
I live life in moderation and try to balance the good with the bad. The Seanad, along with my voluntary commitments, make for quite a hectic work schedule, and I try to manage this with as much good humour as possible. I’m very aware of good mental health, and make sure that, after a busy day or week, I take time for myself and my family.
How often do you exercise?
To be honest, not as much as I would like. I’m involved in the Irish Girl Guides, and volunteer with my local group which keeps me on my toes, as well as a number of other voluntary activities. I also like to take healthy walks when I get a chance, but my work schedule often spills into my evenings and weekends.
Do you get your five a day?
Most days I do well with my five-a-day. Lengthy meetings or ever-changing Seanad agendas do mean, however, that I sometimes skip meals or grab something on the run.
Do you worry?
I don’t worry as much as I did in my early 20s, as I’ve thankfully learned that the world still turns; I remind myself that “this too will pass”. Over the years, I have learned that laughing is the best medicine. And I’m a firm believer in surrounding yourself with good friends and family, so that you can off-load when needs be. Managing stress is essential for good mental health – and this is as important as physical health.
What do you do to relax?
I like researching my family history – it fascinates me. And I also love spending time with friends and family, watching the rugby or taking in a film .
What’s your unhealthiest habit?
Skipping meals – I regularly find myself, particularly in the Oireachtas, eating on the go, instead of sitting down for a proper lunch.
And I think this is my unhealthiest habit.
