Along with physical activity and a balanced diet, a good night’s sleep is the third leg of the stool for good health. But here’s another reason to make sure you are getting enough Zzzzs - it affects how you look to others.
A recent study at the Karolinka Institute in Sweden asked 40 observers to rate faces of 10 people who had been photographed after normal sleep and after sleep deprivation.
“The faces of sleep deprived individuals were perceived as having more hanging eyelids, redder eyes, more swollen eyes, darker circles under the eyes, paler skin, more wrinkles/fine lines, and more droopy corners of the mouth,” write the researchers in the journal Sleep. “In addition, sleep-deprived individuals looked sadder than after normal sleep, and sadness was related to looking fatigued.”
So give yourself an overnight facial simply by getting enough sleep.
