Mr Charles Haughey is recovering in hospital this evening after collapsing at his Kinsealy home at 1 a.m.
Mr Haughey: on a ventilator.
|
His son, Mr Seán Haughey TD, said his father had not suffered a heart attack but had a serious cardiac condition, known as an irregularity of the heart.
He said his father was no longer on a ventilator and would be removed from the intensive care unit at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, tomorrow. Mr Haughey's life is not now considered to be in danger.
A statement issued by the hospital this morning had said he has a "serious life-threatening cardiac condition".
The hospital said it was assessing Mr Haughey's "cardiac function" throughout the day and it would issue a further statement this evening.
He is under the care of Prof Eoin O'Brien and anaesthetist Dr Brian Lamont.
Mr Haughey has been in poor health since being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1995.
Six months ago a medical report given to the Moriarity tribunal said he was terminally ill with prostate cancer.
As a result the inquiry agreed to hear further evidence from Mr Haughey in private and it has been doing so.
