The Green Party has moved to disassociate itself from those "attempting to raise immigration scares" prior to the Nice Treaty referendum.

Party chairman Mr John Gormley said: "We reject scaremongering of any sort, be it from the Government who claim that saying No will lead to a loss of jobs or from certain sections of the No campaign who claim we will be flooded with immigrants if we vote yes. We simply don't believe there will be a 'flood'.
"We sincerely hope that the issue of immigration will not become a feature. It would, in our view, simply deflect from the main issues," he said.
The party also announced the appointment of Dublin Mid-West TD Mr Paul Gogarty to the position of director of elections for the Nice campaign.
Mr Gogarty said that the party would be appealing to President McAleese to call a meeting of the Council of State and to consider referring the holding of a second Nice referendum to the Supreme Court.
"There is strong legal opinion which suggests that the holding of the same referendum twice is contrary to Article 6.1 of the Constitution," he said.
Mr Gogarty claimed the Taoiseach was having "difficulty motivating the troops". He said that the Green Party had members who were highly motivated and could not "wait to get started on what they see as a straight fight for democratic values".
