The Garda has warned motorists to take extra care on the roads this bank holiday weekend and not to drink and drive.
Extra gardaí have been drafted in to monitor speeding and other road traffic offences and several checkpoints were notable in Dublin this morning.
Meanwhile, AA Roadwatch warned that traffic will be heavy in some areas, particularly around Fairyhouse racecourse in Co Meath this afternoon.
Racing starts at 2.15pm and the last race is at 5.25pm. Up to 5,000 people are expected to attend.
Tomorrow, there will be traffic diversions in place due to the annual Easter Parade in Dublin city.
Sinn Féin leaders Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness will be in Dublin tomorrow to take part in the commemorations to mark the 92nd anniversary of the 1916 Rising.
The North's deputy first minister Martin McGuinness will attend the State commemoration on O¹Connell Street at midday and Gerry Adams will address a major Sinn Féin Rally in the city later in the afternoon.
More than 100 commemorations will take place in towns and villages across Ireland, Sinn Féin said.
To accommodate the Dublin events, Dublin Bus will divert northbound and southbound services from 6.30am to 4pm. Buses will follow their normal routes as far as O'Connell Street Bridge and then turn right onto Eden Quay, left onto Beresford Place, Gardiner Street, left onto Parnell Street, Parnell Square West and back onto normal route.
Southbound buses will follow their normal route to Parnell Square East, left to Parnell Street, right onto Malborough Street, right onto Eden Quay, left onto O'Connell Street Bridge and back onto normal route.
Normal Nitelink services will operate tonight, Saturday. The Easter Sunday Nitelink service will operate as it does on Monday to Thursday with departures at midnight and 2am.
Limerick will play Galway in the Allianz Hurling League at Páirc Na nGael tomorrow. Kick-off is at 2.30pm and delays should be expected through Limerick city and on the approach roads from Galway.
Met Éireann said it will be cold today with sunny spells and scattered showers, with the heaviest and most frequent in the west and north. Some showers will be wintry and possibly thundery.
Highest temperatures will be 5 to 8 degrees with fresh and gusty north winds backing northwest towards evening and easing, the meteorological service said.
