Hundreds of wild brown trout and salmon have been killed after sewage leaked into a river near the Co Galway town of Athenry.

The leak is understood to have come from a sewage plant. Galway County Council and the Fisheries Board are trying to deal with the pollution as it moves down river.

It is feared that thousands of fish could ultimately be killed by the pollution, which also will affect several popular bathing spots.
