The Government today pledged €1.5 million as part of a new scheme to fund youth cafes.

Local communities wishing to set up the youth-centred facilities will also be able to avail of two new advice booklets.

Minister for Children, Barry Andrews, said the bulk of the money would go towards setting up new outlets but just over a fifth would be set aside to help existing cafes improve or expand.

"I am delighted to announce this scheme and publish these practical guides, which will help young people and local communities in setting up and running youth cafes throughout the country," Mr Andrews said.

There are currently 30 cafes up and running around the country and Mr Andrews said the Government was committed to expanding that number.

A spokeswoman for the minister said the Government did not have a target for the number of cafes nationwide.

Cormac Forkan, of the Child and Family Research Centre NUI Galway, which co-authored both new publications, said they would help those wishing to set up new facilities.
