Doctors in Canada are fighting to save the life of a baby girl found frozen solid in the snow wearing only a nappy.
The one-year-old girl, from Edmonton, woke in the middle of the night and wandered outside into -20C temperatures shortly before dawn yesterday. No one knows how long she was outside.
Medics at a hospital in the city are trying to save her life. When she was found, she was clinically dead and frozen almost solid. A hospital spokesman said she is likely to remain critical for the next few days.
When she arrived at the hospital there was no signs of life. Her toes were frozen together and her mouth frozen shut.
Dr Allan De Caen, a pediatric intensive care specialist at Edmonton's Stollery Children's Hospital, said: "She wasn't breathing. She didn't have a pulse. She looked dead."
Doctors attempted resuscitation and the girl's heart re-started. It is not known if there will be any brain damage. The family has not been named. Dr De Caen said the next 12 to 24 hours will be critical to the girl's recovery.
Police, who initially dispatched child abuse investigators to the scene, said no criminal charges will be laid.
