French unemployment holds at 9.3% in April

France's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 9

France's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 9.3 per cent in April, unchanged from March's level, the Labour Ministry said.

The number of registered unemployed who are "immediately available" for work rose by 2,800 or 0.1 per cent, to reach 2,370,300 on a seasonally adjusted basis.

This category excludes those on the unemployment register who undertake part-time or temporary work for more than 78 hours per month. Including such registrants, the number of jobless rose by 13,100 or 0.5 per cent to 2,779,300 in April.

The ministry also issued figures for the number of unemployed based on International Labour Organisation definitions. These gave a seasonally adjusted total of 2,512,000 in April, up 0.3 per cent from March. The unemployment rate series is calculated using these figures.
