A large rescue operation was mounted on Saturday night after a French tourist fell ill in a remote area of the Burren in Co Clare. The alarm was raised at about 7.45pm when the ambulance service was alerted to a man in his 40s having suffered a seizure near Carron.

An ambulance, along with a rapid response advanced paramedic unit, was sent to the scene from Ennis. Medics discovered the man was not easily accessible because of his location about a kilometre from the road.The Doolin unit of Irish Coast Guard as well as the Shannon-based Coast Guard rescue helicopter were dispatched to the scene.The man was flown to University Hospital Galway for treatment.
