Paris - French President Jacques Chirac, sent a message of condolences to his Turkish counterpart President Suleyman Demirel.
"I heard with awe and grief of the violent earthquake which cruelly struck the Istanbul region," Mr Chirac wrote. "In such tragic circumstances, I want to express to you all my sympathy in this ordeal in my own name and on behalf of the French people."
