A man charged in connection with a cache of weapons in Limerick has been refused bail after gardaí alleged he was part of an ongoing feud in the city.

Mr Michael Scanlon (31) St Mary's Terrace, Askeaton, Co Limerick is charged with possession of a sub-machine gun for unlawful purposes and an explosive device on June 3rd last at Loughmore, Mungret Co Limerick.

Opposing bail on behalf of the state, Detective Inspector Bob Noonan said it would be alleged that Mr Scanlon was found in possession of the items, when gardaí searched a shed at the back of a house in Loughmore, Mungret on June 3rd last.

He added that he believed the accused was part of an ongoing feud in Limerick city, which has resulted in the loss of life.

Mr Scanlon's solicitor denied his client was involved in the feud.

Judge Tom O'Donnell refused bail because of the seriousness of the charges and remanded Mr Scanlon in custody until June 26th.

Meanwhile, three other men charged in connection with the same arms seizure were also further remanded in custody.

Mr Richard Smith (58) and his son Sean (30), both with an address at Loughmore, Mungret, and Mr Declan Sheehy (36), St Mary's Park, Limerick, are charged with having control of a submachine gun for an unlawful purpose and an explosive device on June 3rd last.

Their solicitors did not apply for bail.
