Four people have died after a light aircraft crashed in a field in West Sussex.

Four people have died after a light aircraft crashed in a field in West Sussex.

The plane came down in a field in Sharpthorne, near East Grinstead, at around 2.25pm. A member of the public spotted the plane in difficulties and saw it crashing to the ground.

Inspector Michael Pollitt, from Sussex Police, said it was unclear how many people had been killed in the accident.

He said: "There has been a light aircraft come down in a field earlier today. There appear to have been a number of fatalities but we are not sure how many bodies there are.

"A full air accident investigation has been launched."

The aircraft did not hit any buildings or people as it hit the ground, he added. Police, ambulance and fire crews are at the scene.
