A former Co Wexford garda has been jailed for three years for causing loss by corruption and deception to an insurance company. John Joe Synnott (55), of Camblin, New Ross, was found guilty at the April sitting of Wexford Circuit Criminal Court.

Synnott, who was based in Wexford town Garda station at the time of the offences, had pleaded not guilty to charges arising out of an alleged road incident at Newtown Road on the outskirts of Wexford town on September 9th, 2007.

Judge Alice Doyle sentenced him to three years in prison on each of the three charges, to run concurrently, with two years suspended. She refused leave to appeal.
