A Former attorney general and senior counsel has been disqualified from driving for two years for being more than twice over the legal drink-driving limit.

Mr John Rogers, through his solicitor, Mr James Walsh, pleaded guilty at Navan District Court yesterday to the offence near his home at Crewbane, Slane, Co Meath, on March 7th.

Insp Liam Conlon said Mr Rogers had a blood alcohol reading of 189 mg of alcohol; the legal limit is 80 mg. Mr Walsh said his client had fully co-operated on the night and would "take his medicine".

He had no previous convictions. Judge John Brophy imposed the mandatory two-year disqualification, ordered his driving licence to be endorsed and fined him £100 plus £75 Medical Bureau expenses.

He said he would restore the licence in 12 months if such an application came before him.
