Over 2,000 students from outside the EU have been given permission to take up casual employment in the Republic while studying in college, under changes introduced by the Department of Justice, writes Emmet Oliver For two years the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) has been lobbying for the change, saying there was unfair discrimination against non-EU students.

The USI said that many of the students were from poorer countries and needed a job to fund their education.
