Metallica and Fatboy Slim are the headline musical acts in what promises to be a fun-filled yet damp and windy August Bank Holiday weekend.

Both acts play Marlay Park in Dublin tomorrow and Sunday respectively so expect long delays around the area as rockers and ravers get ready to party.

In Wicklow, the Bray Summerfest continues through the weekend, in Co Donegal, the Mary from Dungloe festival takes place until Monday and in Meath, the Le Chéile Festival is under way in Oldcastle. Race meetings are on Cork on Sunday and at Naas on Monday.

In Co Kildare the Rathangan Lughnasa Festival runs to Monday while in Durrow, Co Laois, a Howya Festival will take place on Sunday only.

The Galway races continue apace with three more days of racing today, tomorrow and Sunday. Tonight is an evening meeting with the first race at 5:10pm while Sunday is Family Day so expect even heavier traffic around the Ballybrit area.

In GAA the All-Ireland football championship moves into third gear with three quarter finals taking place this weekend at Croke Park.

On Sunday there’s a double header as Cork take on Donegal and Tyrone face Kildare – throw in at 2pm and 4pm. Then on Monday it’s the big one as the Kingdom take on the Metropolitans throw in at 2pm.

On Saturday, Limerick takes on Meath in a forth-round qualifier at O’Moore Park, Portlaoise tomorrow at 7pm.

Iarnród Éireann has amended timetables to provide a train service for supporters from Limerick, Charleville and Limerick Junction. The company also advises customers to check its website as certain other services will be affected due to engineering works on some lines.

Luas stops at Busaras and Connolly Station will be closed for the Bank Holiday weekend to facilitate the development of the Docklands line.

Dublin airport expects more than 300,000 passengers to travel through its doors over the bank holiday weekend. With over 2,000 flights arriving and departing passengers are advised to be inside the terminal at least 90 minutes before flight departure time.

The airport authority said the hours between 5-7am are especially busy with up to 10,000 passengers departing during that time.

Weatherwise the outlook for the weekend is grim as Met Éireann forecasts wet and windy weather across all counties for most of the weekend.

Today will be windy with threats of localised flooding. Saturday will start windy with sunny spells and showers. Some of the showers will turn heavy and possibly thundery dying out by late evening. Sunday will start fine but again it will turn wet later in the day. Monday and Tuesday are also expected to be windy with showers or longer outbreaks of rain. Highest daytime temperatures will generally range 16 C to 19 C, with mostly southerly winds.

Meanwhile, gardaí reminded motorists that 28 people were killed or seriously injured over the August Bank Holiday period last year and have advised motorists to stop reckless behaviour.

Both gardaí and the Road Safety Authority have launched a “slow down for us” appeal, in which family members and friends are being asked to remind drivers of the consequences for them, of dangerous driving.
