Five climbers died over the weekend and a sixth was reported missing as bad weather swept over the French Alps.

Rescue teams on Mont Blanc also came across the body of a Russian skier missing since March, named as Mr Alexandre Faucoloff, the police said.

Three Frenchmen died of exhaustion and exposure while attempting to climb Mont Blanc and the search for a companion had to be called off because of the poor weather conditions.

The four set out on Friday to scale Mont Blanc, a 4,800 metre (13,800 ft) peak which straddles the borders of France and Italy, and sent out a distress signal hours later as a storm set in.
