Five people died when their car burst into flames after a motorway crash in Britain involving several lorries and cars.

The victims, thought to be two adults and three young children, died at the scene of the crash on the M6 in Cheshire, police said.

The crash between three heavy goods vehicles and two cars happened on the north-bound carriageway at about 10.40pm yesterday.

A lorry driver, a 46-year-old Portuguese man working for a Spanish company, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The crash followed a fatal crash one junction further along the same section of motorway, which had caused tailbacks, police said.

Just before 9pm yesterday, a white van hit a bridge parapet, killing the driver, a man in his 30s.

The north-bound section of the M6 between junctions 16 and 17 remains closed.
