Colombo - Ferocious battles raged in Sri Lanka yesterday as the military launched a major air and ground attack against Tamil Tiger rebels, leaving at least 71 dead and more than 150 wounded, officials said.
Government soldiers backed by aircraft mounted a two-pronged assault on positions of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the north-western district of Mannar.
