Evidence of primitive plants and rivers more than 400 million years ago have been found on Clare Island, Co Mayo, a seminar was told yesterday. The conference was held by the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin to present final reports of the geology section of the new survey of the island, situated at the mouth of Clew Bay.

Dr John Graham of the Department of Geology, TCD, said that fossils provided evidence of the ancient rivers. He also spoke about cross-sections of ancient river channels, flood plains and soils from 350 million years ago which had been exposed.
