An intervention initiative was introduced last year to help schools to prepare students in danger of leaving or failing for the Junior Cert exam. Called the Junior Cert School Programme (JCSP), it is aimed specifically at those who show signs of school failure or early leaving.
"It's a different approach," says Aideen Cassidy, co-ordinator of the programme which is now in 59 schools around the country involving just under 2,000 students. It's projected that 21 new schools will enter the programme in the coming September.
All students following the JCSP work towards the Junior Cert. The aim is that the students stay in school, enjoy school, experience success, improve attendance and develop positive self-images. The programme also aims to allow students to see possibilities of progress, to take part in sport and outdoor activities, in artistic activities and generally to feel involved in the learning process.
