Lecture on Understanding Cancer at TCDTrinity College Dublin, in association with the Irish Cancer Society, has organised a public lecture on cancer research this evening at 7.30pm in the Edmund Burke Theatre, Arts Building, TCD, which aims to help people to understand the disease.

Prof Mark Lawler of St James's Hospital, Dublin, will speak on the molecular and cellular basis of cancer. Pharmacist Gillian Hudson will speak about the design, effects and side-effects of chemotherapy drugs. Prof Thorri Gunnlaugsson from TCD's chemistry department will give a lecture - An Insight into Current Cancer Research - and Patrick Corley from the Irish Cancer Society will speak on the work carried out by the society. Admission is free. All welcome.

Summer In-Service Training Courses for Teachers

Dyslexia - From Theory to Practice is the title of a course for teachers run by the Dyslexia Association of Ireland.

Courses are on offer in Athlone, Co Westmeath from July 4th to 8th and in Tralee, Co Kerry, from August 15th to 19th. Courses run from 9.30am to 2pm each day. The course fee is €150 and pre-booking is essential.

Open Days at RACE for Aspiring Jockeys

The Racing Academy and Centre of Education (Race) in Kildare is holding an open day today at 2pm. Students, parents and guidance counsellors are invited to view the extensive facilities, meet staff and find out more about the trainee jockey course.

This 10-month residential course is sponsored by Fás and combines practical riding instruction and work placement with Fetac modules. Candidates must be between 15 and 18 years of age and weigh less than 9 stone (57kg).The closing date for applications June 24th. Community Playgroup Initiative Report

Copies of the final evaluation report of the Community Playgroup Initiative (2001-2004) are available from the Katharine Howard Foundation (KHF) at 01-4531861 or e-mail info@khf.ie. CPI was a three-year project set up to support and fund five community playgroups in the the south east. The final evaluation report outlines many enhancements in the quality of provision as a result of CPI and also highlights the many benefits that community playgroups provide for children, families and communities.
