A collection of paintings chosen by eight teenagers has just been hung at Garter Lane Arts Centre in Waterford for public viewing. The students came together from schools in Dublin, Meath and Waterford, to choose works from the Irish Museum of Modern Art's collection and their choices, entitled somebodies runs until Saturday, October 30th. Admission is free and school groups are especially welcome. Opening hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m, Monday to Saturday. UCC's open day for schools is this Saturday, , between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. All Leaving Cert students are welcome. Congratulations to Raja Mukherji (16), formerly of Drimnagh Castle CBS and currently a science student at UCD, who won a bronze medal at this year's International Mathematical Olympiad in Romania. He won a bronze medal last year also. He has just embarked on a degree programme in science at UCD. This is the first time an Irish student has won medals at the olympiad in successive years and only the fourth time since Ireland was invited to participate in 1988.

Raja was also a member of the team representing Ireland in the International Chemistry Olympiad in Thailand and won a silver medal there as part of a successful team performance. Also he has won the UCD Open Day mathematics competition four years in a row. This year 81 countries took part in the IMO which took place in Bucharest, Romania, during July. Each participating country is represented by a team of six second-level students. The principal sponsor of Irish participation in the IMO is the Department of Education and Science. A new brochure for Transition Year students is now available from schools with the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions; information for every students on what Transition Year is all about and a list of the opportunities offered to students during this year. A new play from the Team Educational Theatre Company is running for the week at the Samuel Beckett Centre as part of the Dublin Fringe Festival. Called Burning Dreams, it's aimed at second- and thirdyear pupils and addresses the subject of ideals and the potential conflict between personal ideals and those of society during a time of great need. It's written by Frances Kay in collaboration with Team.

After its run in Dublin the show, which starts at 1.05 p.m in TCD, continues its nationwide tour running until December.

Performing opportunities for students continue to develop at the Royal Irish Academy of Music with six Saturday lunchtime concerts planned for the National Gallery of Ireland this term. Senior students at the RIAM will perform chamber music by a wide variety of composers in the Gallery's Shaw Room on October 16th and 30th and November 13th and 27th and December 11th and 18th.

Students will also give a series of evening concerts at the Goethe Institute on Wednesday, November 17th and on Wednesday, December 1st and at the Alliance Francaise on Tuesday, November 23rd.
