When published in its original Dutch version earlier this year, it was awarded a UNESCO prize in its Literature for Children and Young People category. Kranendonk is a sports teacher, who was born in Holland in 1959. Her story is about a skateboard fanatic who hides a mysterious secret.
Also Buachaill on mBavair by Sean Ua Cearnaigh, which has just been published by the Connemara-based company, is about a hunky pen pal who comes to stay. And Seoda ar Sinsear by Eddie Bheairtle O Conghaile, an established singer and seanchai, is a collection of stories and rhymes for children and learners. Teenagers across Europe will unite under a "Live Life without Cigarettes' banner early next month when a trans-European campaign gets under way. In Ireland a number of initiatives are being co-ordinated by the Department of Health, the Irish Cancer Society and the health boards. The campaign will run between Monday October 4th and Sunday, October 10th.
Free postcards will be distributed to cafes, bars, restaurants and universities in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Kilkenny, Sligo, Kerry, Wexford and Waterford. A booklet with advice and information, highlighting some of the 4,000 chemicals contained in a burning cigarette (from rat poison to drain cleaner) will be distributed. Also a teenage callsave quitline will be set-up to operate from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. with a trained smoking cessation counsellor giving advice. The number is 1850 201 203.
An adaptation of Jane Austin's is currently being staged by Story Tellers' Theatre Company and touring at the moment. The cast are doing both matinee and night-time performances. The play may be in a theatre near you shortly. The production is particularly aimed at Leaving Cert students. It will be in Cork Opera House from today until Friday, October 1st. Next week it travels to Hawk's Well in Sligo for two nights. Then it's on to the Backstge Theatre in Longford and then on Monday, October 11th, it will be in the Belltable Arts Centre in Limerick for three nights. Enjoy. It's worth a visit.

Young violinists and viola players will be preparing to attend the Eleventh International Autumn Sound Fest 1999, which takes place next month in Dublin at the National Concert Hall. Presented by Young European Strings Promotion, it runs over a week from October 23rd to October 30th. There will be daily master-classes from Professor Galina Turchaninova, a world-renowned violinist, in the College of St Columba in Whitechurch, Dublin 16. Following her master-classes, her violin students from all parts of Ireland, all between the ages of 8 and 10, will present a performance in the NCH on the last day of the festival. Tickets for students are £3.
