OPERATION SMILE:International children's charity Operation Smile provides surgery to repair cleft lip, palates and other facial deformities.
Louise Kavanagh, a sixth year student in Mount Anville school, set up an Operation Smile club in her school back in 2007. Since then, the group has raised over €42,000 and taken part in education programmes in the Philippines, while other Irish students travelled to missions in Vietnam, Ethiopia, India, Morocco, and Kenya.
This year, Louise received the Logan Taylor Memorial Award at Operation Smile’s International Student Leadership Conference in Virginia, US. Every year this award is given to an international student who shows leadership, compassion, commitment and cultural sensitivity. Louise is now planning a Leadership Day in the Royal College of Surgeons on February 3rd, 2010. All TY students are invited to attend.
