Agri Aware names winning teams

The Irish Times/Agri Aware Biotechnology Challenge is reaching its climax

The Irish Times/Agri Aware Biotechnology Challenge is reaching its climax. The four-person panel has selected three winning teams from the final judging stage. They now have to wait until the awards ceremony on May 9th, when the first-, second- and third-placed projects will be announced.

The winning teams are:

St Macartans College, Monaghan (teacher Paul West, students Kevin Malcolmson, Malachy Trainor, Thomas McCluskey and Niall Maguire);

Presentation de la Salle College, Bagenalstown, Co Carlow (teacher Mary Hande, students Denis Whelan, Fiona Maher, Mary Meaney, Anita Purcell);

St John Bosco Community College, Cahercon, Kildysart, Ennis, Co Clare (teacher Leo O'Donoghue, students Orla Shannon, Aoife Coffey, Linda McMahon). The three teachers have been invited by Monsanto Ireland to attend the conference for US science teachers to be held next month in St Louis, Missouri. John McCullen, chairman of Agri Aware and honorary president of the Irish Agricultural Science Teachers Institute, has thanked all the teachers who assisted their Transition Year classes in taking up the Agri Aware Challenge. The winning team will receive a specially constructed website for their school and a digital camera for each team member. The runner-up team members will each receive a PlayStation and the third-placed team members will each get a CD player with a selection of CDs.
