European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has arrived in the North where he is meeting the Rev Ian Paisley and Martin McGuinness during a one-day show of support.

He is expected to pledge Europe's co-operation with the powersharing executive, which takes over on May 8th.

The Irish, British and US governments have already backed the accord, which follows months of talks on Sinn Féin's commitment to policing and Democratic Unionists' willingness to work with them.

Politicians are likely to lobby Mr Barroso for continued financial support for the peace process and discuss other forms of co-operation.

The former Portuguese prime minister's visit follows a series of European funding initiatives which have contributed millions of euros to cross-Border development.

The Irish and British governments have already pledged an extra £600 million if devolution is restored.
