The Dutch doctor at the centre of a medical scandal that rocked Britain when it was revealed he had stripped organs from hundreds of dead children was suspended from the British medical register yesterday.

The General Medical Council (GMC) decided at an emergency meeting that Prof Dick van Velzen, who worked at Alder Hey hospital in Liverpool, northern England, should not be allowed to work as a doctor in Britain.

The professional regulatory body said the pathologist, who worked at the hospital from 1988 to 1995, would be suspended for the protection of patients.
