Bernadette McAliskey will be among the speakers at this weekend's celebration of the life and times of Peadar O'Donnell in Dungloe. The three-day event will be officially opened tonight by James Plunkett, the author of Strumpet City and a friend of Peadar O'Donnell.

One of the organisers, Fiona Sweeney, said the aim of the weekend was to raise awareness about Peader O'Donnell, particularly among young people.

During his lifetime, his views often met with disapproval in his home area, particularly when he clashed with the Catholic Church over his role in the Spanish Civil War.

A native of Meenmore, two miles from Dungloe, he also fought in the Irish Civil War, on the republican side. A committed trade unionist, he was a prolific writer and editor of The Bell. He died in 1986 at the age of 93.
