Background: The Cork TD took a risk when he launched his own bid for the leadership of the party. It certainly resulted in publicity but now sees him languishing on the backbenches. He supported John Bruton in the original heave. After pulling out of the race on the night before the vote last week, he supported Enda Kenny.

Mr Paul Connaughton

Constituency: Galway East

Age: 56

Position held: Spokesman on Marine, Natural Resources and Energy.

Background: It remains a mystery as to how this low-profile deputy voted in last week's leadership contest. However, his demotion from the front bench was not a surprise. A farmer, he has a strong knowledge of agricultural matters and will be in the Agricultural "cabinet" as part of the party's determination to field a particularly strong team in this area.

Ms Nora Owen

Constituency: Dublin North

Age: 55

Position held: Deputy leader with special responsibility for quality of life issues and family affairs.

Background: A week ago Ms Owen was acting leader of Fine Gael but there was no place for this staunch John Bruton loyalist on the new party front bench. She will serve as part of the Foreign Affairs "cabinet". Ms Owen was the first woman to be appointed a deputy party leader and she has also served as Minister for Justice.

Mr Denis Naughten

Constituency: Longford/Roscommon

Age: 27

Position held: Spokesman on Enterprise, Trade and Employment.

Background: The youngest TD in the Dail, Mr Naughten was seen as a rising star while John Bruton was leader of the party. He did not declare who he supported in last week's leadership contest. He served as a senator after the death of his father, Liam, in a car accident and was first elected a TD in 1997.
