Dodds deplores death of Catholic teenager

The DUP's North Belfast MP, Mr Nigel Dodds, has said there was no excuse for the violence in his constituency.

The DUP's North Belfast MP, Mr Nigel Dodds, has said there was no excuse for the violence in his constituency.

Visiting the parents of the Catholic teenager shot dead by the Ulster Freedom Fighters on Sunday night, Mr Dodds said he had wanted to convey to Mr Gerard Lawlor's family that the "vast majority of the Protestant community and indeed every right-thinking person in society, totally deplored and abhorred" what had happened.

Meanwhile, Sinn Féin MP, Mr Martin McGuinness, has called for a meeting with senior loyalist paramilitaries as the only way to stop the cycle of sectarian violence. "I would love to meet with the Loyalist Commission and I would be prepared to meet with Johnny Adair and I would be prepared to meet with them in the Shankill Road," he added.

Mr McGuinness was speaking at a press conference at which his party gave details of 363 alleged sectarian attacks against Catholics over the past three months.
