Consumer electronics firm Dixons is to create 1,300 new jobs in Britain and Ireland over the next year, mainly in existing or new stores.

Dixons says new technology and lower prices for goods such as widescreen televisions has boosted sales.

The chain said 125 jobs will be created in Ireland. Group chief executive Mr John Clare said: "This growth in staff numbers reflects consumers' enthusiasm for new technology and the continued demand for the latest digital products.

"Our new employees will enable us to keep driving up service excellence and offer the combination of exciting products and great prices that brings millions of loyal customers back to our stores each year."

Dixons has over 1,100 stores across Britain, Ireland and Europe.

The firm has warned that the PC market is "more difficult" and "continued volatility" was expected in both the consumer PC and mobile phone markets.

Turnover for the year ending April 29th was £4.69 billion sterling, up from £3.89 billion a year ago.
