Irish mobile operator Digifone today unveiled its next generation of mobile phones that it says will be immediately available to corporate, business and contract consumer customers.
The GPRS (General Packet Radio Services) service - known as 2.5G - will allow users to log onto a data network that will remain constantly on.
Digifone says it is the first operator to provide GPRS roaming facilities to its Irish customers in the UK and Germany.
Pre-paid customers will be able to use these services from summer 2002. Digifone is a wholly owned subsidiary of MMO2.
Digifone chief executive Ms Danuta Gray said: "With data expected to account for over 25 per cent of service revenue across the O2 Group by 2004, this launch, the result of a €45 million investment, is of immense importance to our business".
Ms Gray said: "We are confident that our service offers optimum performance, security and cost effectiveness for our customers".
"The commercial availability of a full range of GPRS services and applications for all our customers is the final validation of Digifone's commitment to the provision of 3G," she said.
