A former RUC officer has pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to sexually assaulting a former Dublin prostitute working on Wolfe Tone Quay two years ago.

Trevor Scobie (40), of Somerset Range, Coleraine, Co Derry, pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting the 29-year-old woman a few minutes before his retrial for raping her was due to begin yesterday.

Mr Justice Butler scheduled the sentence hearing for November 14th when a victim impact report will be furnished. Evidence of the crime will be heard at the sentence hearing.

Scobie had originally been charged with rape, assault causing harm and stealing approximately IR£30 from the woman on November 27th, 1999, at Wolfe Tone Quay, Dublin.

After a five-day trial in February a jury failed to agree on the rape charge and acquitted him of the theft charge but convicted Scobie of assault causing her harm. Miss Justice Carroll jailed him for three years for the assault.
