Tokyo - Former Prime Minister Noboru Takeshita, Japan's political puppet master par excellence, died early this morning, Japanese media reported. He was 76.
Takeshita had been in hospital for more than a year and last month decided not to run in a general election set for June 25th. Many saw his retirement from the political stage as the end of an era of "shadow shoguns" who called all the shots from behind the scenes.
